May that Shambhu give us happiness. He descended from Kailasa to the earth with the name Shankaracharya and conquered the avaidika practices and established the Shanmatas. He installed His shishyas in the Peeta named Kamakoti Peeta.

May Vishnu the dweller of Vaikuntha, and the one free of defects, and of undiminished greatness, and who is dedicated solely to protection of the worlds protect us and bless us with undecaying wellness. He the Lord, who stepping down from His greatness took on due to compassion many avataras (lower) such as the kurma as if like an actor, is the remover of great troubles.

Kumbhaghonam, the famous town of Chola desha, shines brilliantly. With beautiful (spring-like), prosperous temples shining like the Lord of Lakshmi (Vishnu). The region has places worthy of dwelling and endowed with wealth and good astika folks. It is studded with the pristine Vishnu Kshetras sanctified on the banks of the pure Marudvrdha (Kaveri) and Harisarit (Arisilaaru) and is beautiful and decorated by towns and villages blessed with wealth.

(The city) which indeed, shines supremely, like svarga with its splendor worthy of seeing with a thousand eyes (Indra’s), like Alakapuri ruled by Kubera (the lord of wealth), like Mount Kailasa adorned by Shiva on its peak, and like the Himalayas, the abode of all auspiciousness – and the crown jewel among all cities;

And further that which is like the ocean of milk a repository of priceless gems and the source of Lakshmi; Like the Vindhya forest floor resplendent with various lotuses; Like the golden mountain adorned with the dwelling places of the devatas; Like Arjuna – the bearer of Gandiva forever radiant with dharma – All people repeatedly come to see it.

And by which, like Lord Shiva’s body resplendent with bhasma; Like Narayana’s waist captivating with yellow silk garments, like Brahmaloka sanctified by the constant sound of Veda adhyayana, Like Indra with his true glory visible to unblinking eyes of the devas – rendering all other cities subordinate.

The devas wished to conquer the city of Lanka (is envied ) because of the presence of the rakshasas (punyajanas). (In Kumbhaghonam, people who have done punya stay). In the midnight sky adorned with noble constellations the devas stay. (Here in the temples there are many devatas who can be said as dyusad). The devatas reside in an ascetic’s heart as it is free from impurities (so too in this town). The devas want to partake of the autumn moon’s radiant rays (so too are the bright mansions here. Hence even the devas wish to live here.

And just as the groups of birds (dvijas being born as an egg and hatching) rejoice in the lotus pond in spring time, the dvijas (brahmanas) rejoice here; Like the sun always walking the royal path – this city is on the large road; Like lotus-born four-faced Brahma, always being a stage for Saraswati’s delight – this city is a stage for Sarasvati. Like the wish-fulfilling celestial tree it is eager to distribute all desired fruits – other places take (from here) things suitable for accomplishing all Vaidika and laukika purposes.

And like Mount Malaya with beautiful fragrant sandal, like the Patalaloka adorned with the assembly of Nagas, like the city of Varanasi beautified by Vishwanatha and Vishalakshi, like a sacred garden always filled with all flowers – all come joyfully to stay;

And in which, like a battleground crowded with elephants, horses, chariots and infantry; Like a celestial city charming with song and instrumental music, Like Valmiki’s hermitage with endless narration of Sri Rama’s story, Like Dwaraka’s Lord causing eternal bliss in the world – there are rows of shops that is capable of attracting wealth even from the extremely miserly.

And furthermore – where they stand,
The sweetness of the celestial rivers surpasses Kaveri’s waters – To quickly dispel this long-held myth among the svarga-dwellers, these sacred coconut trees, having gathered water from the Kaveri’s depths in their fruits, are now, I think, rushing to svarga to offer proof.

Where the pristine Kaveri, born of the Sahya mountains, swiftly flows with joy towards the ocean (her Lord), as if eager to reach him (Samudra being jadanidhi since there is no flow of water since it is also a jalanidhi hence swiftly) without delay since the shastras hold that a woman’s rightful place is by her husband’s side. Kaladhipa is Chandra or those who have learnt the arts. Parameshvara bears the moon. Jagadguru is revered by the experts in the arts. Bhagavan Shiva despite being the refuge of Sati devi wears the unmatta flower and drank poison; Jagadguru is the refuge of satyam but does not have those faults. Vishnu – though benefiting the devas (vibudhas) was an enemy of rakshasas (punyajanas); Jagadguru though does hitam to the scholars (vibudhas) but is not an enemry of those who have done punya. Brahma – though seated on a large hamsa (swan) was born from the lotus born from the jadam / jalam (of the ocean); Jagadguru is the head of the Paramahamsas but has no qualities of jadam. Indra is known as Shatamanyu because he angrily battled hundreds of rakshashas. He is worshipped by the devatas. Jagadguru is worshipped by the good but is not wrathful.

Like King Janaka – though renouncing kingdom, not desiring a householder’s life; like Vasishtha – though revering Brahma/ Veda vakyas but not an enemy of Vishwamitra; like Manu – though quick to teach duties of all varnas and ashramas of life, but not attached to rulership of the earth; like Vyasa – though narrating sacred stories of the Puranas, not born outside brahmana lineage – He is respectfully worshopped by everyone.

By whom, like the Sun – Lord of lotuses – though delighting the brahmanas/birds, but not hostile to lillies; like Yamadharma though creating joy to the Sun (as his putra), but not wielding the punishing rod; Like Varuna – even though He is cool-natured, not the Lord of oceans / ignorance; Like Kubera – though devoted to Shiva, not lord of kinnaras – the dense inner darkness of people praying to Him is destroyed.

Like the Mahabharata – though dedicated to showing dharma’s victory, not dependent on Krishna’s charita (ie having no connection to dirt or the colour black); like the Ramayana – though enhanced by Sumantra’s counsel, not focused on Khara’s killing; like the Bhagavata – though eager to describe divine glory, not wearing a Kuchela (torn clothing); like the Devi Bhagavata – though describing the Supreme Goddess’s nature, not intolerant of other deities’ glory – To Him they offer respectful salutations

In Vyakarana shastra (Grammar) – though addition of secondary taddhita affixes (vikrti) to primary forms (Prakrti), it is said that there is lopa (elision) of endings in words like Pada. Jagadguru on the other hand speaks hitam to the people (prakrti) but does not cause any lopam (elision or lessening) to them.
Like Kanada’s (Vaisheshika) shastram – Jagadguru proved Ishvara’s nature through inference and yuktis but for the Jagadguru Veda was the main pramana; like Mimamsa shastram, the Jagadguru though revealing all Vedic ritual essences, accepted Ishvara as the giver of karma phala; Vedanta shastram is committed to explaining non-dual nature of self, but some of the yuktis used in that shastram (may seem to be like nastika even if it is not). Jagadguru however spoke only the astika methods. From such a person all receive proper instruction according to their merits.

Who is like Mount Kailasa – though adorned with Shiva’s crest-jewel, but not with Silver-hue; Like the Himalayas – though causing all auspiciousness, not inert in nature; Like the golden Meru mountain – though home to all gods, not prone to becoming an object of desire; Like the Vindhya mountains – though sustaining various living beings, not sheltering venomous serpents – He who is like a mountain whose pure rays of fame purify the entire world.

Who is like the autumn Ganges flow (after the rainy season) – though pure and internally radiant, but has not taken the unmatta pushpa in the crown(ie unlike Shiva who is Gangadhara); like the flow of Sarasvati river – though removing devotees’ sins, not concealing itself; like the Yamuna flood – though sanctifying regions by its flow, not doing Krishna’s (sly) acts; Like the Kaveri flow – though skilled in giving life to all, not accepting breaks (crookedness/turns) – In Him all minds constantly delight.

The pair of Sri chakra earrings, offered by the revered Shri Shankaracharya to the divine Akhilandeswari who manifested for the world’s welfare, now appears somewhat worn. Without much delay, May all the people be blessed by you by renovating it. Hearing these words, the revered Guru asked, “Should this s renovation be undertaken by us?”
Hearing this, they hesitantly and reverentially replied with folded hands: “It should not be said by the Mahasvami thus”, They entreated that these earrings were first consecrated according to shastra by the Jagadguru who descended from Kailasa for the world’s welfare. Thereafter, whenever they became slightly worn, they were renovated only by the lineage of Jagadgurus who came in the succession of that supreme teacher’s disciples as the heads of the Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetha.
“Even now, sixty years ago, when these earrings were worn, they were renovated only by the Jagadguru of this Peetam. Therefore, only those Jagadgurus who have been done abhishekam in Peeta have the authority in this matter, not others. What then do ordinary people like us have to say? Therefore, our prayer must be accepted by the Mahaswami and we must be blessed”

Then the Jagadguru, hearing their words said, “It looks like this sacred work for the divine mother of all worlds, first undertaken by the original Acharya in ancient times, shines as the duty of the Jagadgurus previously established on this Peetam.”

Having considered thus, the Jagadguru then spoke this to those filled with devotion:
“Let there not be any more worry in this appropriate task,
Today this will proceed suitably by the Goddess’ will.

Having spoken thus, He blessed them by giving prasada. They too, joyfully accepting the prasadam, announced with prostrations that “From now on, we all shall always be eagerly awaiting the Mahaswami’s arrival,” and departed to their respective villages.
